Progress Check at Age Two

A Guide to The EYFS Progress Check at Age Two

When a child is aged between two and three, practitioners must review their progress, and provide parents and/or carers with a short-written summary of their child’s development in the prime areas of the EYFS: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Communication and Language and Physical Development.

This progress check must identify the child’s strengths, and any areas where the child’s progress is less than expected. If there are significant emerging concerns, or an identified special educational need or disability, practitioners should develop a targeted plan to support the child’s future learning and development involving parents and/or carers and other professionals (for example, the provider’s Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) or health professionals) as appropriate.

A practitioner who knows the child best should complete the check; this will normally be the key person. The progress check should take account of the views and contributions of; parents / carers, other practitioners and where relevant other professionals working with the child. The progress check aims to enable parents to understand their child’s needs and, with support from practitioners, enhance development at home.

At St Peter's most of our children join us between 2 ½ and 3 Years Old. When a parent enrols a child, our team will discuss with parents if a 2-Year-Old progress check has taken place either at a previous setting or with a healthcare professional. We will liaise with parents going forward and provide further information and a progress check where needed.
